Welch High Schoolfootball

On November 7,1952, Welch High School’s football team was defeated by the Gary Coaldiggers by a score of 14-0. The Maroon Wave had to play this game without their starting center Glen Otey. This loss greatly handicapped Welch’s offense. The Maroon Wave finished the 1952 season with 6 wins and 4 losses. “Dashing” Don Boyd was rewarded for his outstanding play by being selected to the All County, All Area, All State, And High School All-American Teams as well as being named the outstanding player in West Virginia. He accepted a scholarship to attend the University of Louisville, Kentucky. Don was a four year starter for the Cardinals. He was fortunate to play his first two years with the great, All Pro Quarterback, John Unitas. After graduation, he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns, but his football career was cut short by a back injury. Don was inducted into the McDowell County Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.
