WW2 - 312th Information

My great grandfather transferred into the 318th in September 44 as part of the 38th replacement battalion. Records indicate that he and the 20 other guys transferred in that day were from the 312th Infantry Regiment, but I can't find proof that this was the 78th during WW2.

Was the 312th part of the 78th during WW2? I'd love to track down his time prior to transferring into the 318th (e.g. where he trained, when he arrived in ETO, etc). I see a lot of records for the 312th as a part of WWI, but not for WW2.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated!
