309 inf reg 78 Div in WW1

Hello,
My grandfathers brother was KIA Oct 19, 1918.
He was Gust A. Osberg pvt 1 cl in 309 inf reg 78 Div.
Me and my brother is trying to find out as much as possible of where and how the fighting was conducted on that day before we go to the cemetery in Meuse-Argonne for the ceremony to honor his memory in November.

We would be extremely greatful for any help on the matter.

Re: 309 inf reg 78 Div in WW1

Hi, Anders,
I am looking in the honor roll section of Meehan’s The 78th Division in the World War (1921) and on p. 225 Gust A. Osberg is reported as a member of Co. D in the 309th but with a date of death of 1 Nov. 1918.

If perhaps he was wounded on 19 October and died on the 30th, then there is a fair amount of material in Meehan (pp. 111-115) on their effort in the Bois des Loges. If KIA on 1 Nov., there is not much that I see at least at first glance.

Do you have sure information that it was the 19th October?

If you have not looked at Meehan, it is a great resource. You can get to an online copy at either the Intrnet Archive https://archive.org/details/historyofseventy00meeh.
Or at the HathiTrust. Https://catalog.hathitrust.org/record/000401896.

Best wishes.
