Hugh Caldwell

Maybe I've brought this up before, but are there any opinions about whether it was a "crime of passion" or a complete accident as he claimed?
All I know is, whichever one it was, Michael McGuire really makes you believe in Hugh as a person "wracked with guilt." It's maybe one of the best performances in a COLUMBO episode.

Re: Hugh Caldwell

Agree he did a good job. A much as it was an accident, I see it as someone who is trying to convince himself that it was an accident in reality.

Re: Hugh Caldwell

I agree. Caldwell is trying to convince himself that it was accidental and maybe it was. But as the Commish points out, with all the trouble they were having nobody would believe it.

Re: Hugh Caldwell

Yes I agree about Michael's performance. So terrified he made ME nervous. Also, gotta give a shout out to Richard Kiley (the police chief) and his performance, as well. They both do a great job the whole episode, especially in the casino scene, when the chief beats the guy in dice, and laughs hard at the dude's misfortune. Fantastic scene right there, as he is interrupted by Hugh's issues. Even the scenes where the police chief is purposely stonewalling Columbo in his office, too busy to even give him the time of day.

I even use the phrase "This is the quid pro quo" when telling people they owe me a favor, and think of how the chief says this to Hugh over the phone when I'm saying it. hehe

Re: Hugh Caldwell

Actually, it was at the funeral parlor.

And that's quid quo pro to you buddy!
