Peter Falk raincoat

I’m feeling good, I just purchased the original Peter Falk raincoat and suit from Columbo worn during the 1990’a, early 2000’s.
Wish I could have purchased the original from the 1970’s, but the runner up isn’t too bad.
I have an elaborate collection of Peter’s Artwork, and this will be a nice piece to add to my collection.

Re: Peter Falk raincoat

What did that set you back, if you're comfortable with sharing. Also, has anybody ever heard of his police ID and badge ever being offered for sale?

Re: Peter Falk raincoat

That's fantastic, Paul, congratulations! I hope you enjoy it. If you're up to it, it would be great if you could post a picture of the coat here in the Forum. (One easy way to create the right kind of link is using Imgur.)

This reminds me, I recently saw the result of the auction of the "original" raincoat, and to be totally honest I was a bit disappointed to see that the purchase price was NOT insanely high. I didn't bid, because the listing by the auction said the expected price would be about $40,000, in a lot that also included Peter's original Columbo shoes. Well, it turns out the coat ultimately went for $1700 (not clear if that included the shoes, but I guess so.) More that I have laying around, but I confess, I would have seriously considered this insane purchase if I knew it would be that price.

But there were excellent photos of the items (which I believe are still on the auction site) and you can see the coat was literally falling apart. You'd be afraid to wear it, or even to handle it much. I don't know if you wear Peter's size, but in a way that 1990s coat must be actually a "better" choice. Again, congratulations, and have fun with it!

Re: Peter Falk raincoat

Thanks Ted,
The auction in my opinion was a poorly advertised auction in Los Angeles, and in the end, the Raincoat you’re referring to (the original from the 70’s) never sold in November, it was listed again Jun 13th and never hit the reserve, they didn’t tell me the reserve, but the top offer was indeed $40k and they didn’t let it go….It still sits at the auction house waiting for Shrea to either pick it up, or try again at a future date.
Originally the Raincoat I purchased on the original auction in November didn’t hit the very optimistic reserve either, and when they relisted with a lower number I won the auction.
I paid slightly more than $5k all in, and it included his entire outfit from that era, suit, raincoat and shoes. I thought it was a steal, especially since I actually only wanted his artwork, which I won too.
Now I need to figure out how to display it, shadow box I guess…

Re: Peter Falk raincoat

Hey Paul, THANK you so much for the true and full history of that "1967 raincoat" auction! To be honest, I feel better knowing some lucky bidder did not actually "steal" the original coat and shoes for $1700. I found that bit of info online, not long ago (no doubt after the fpllow-up offering), but maybe that was just the "lower than reserve" bid that was made but didn't take the prize. I'd love to help with the image posting but I'm traveling, with limited access to the internet. A while ago I posted how to use Imgur for this, but today I no longer find that Imgur offers easy copy/paste versions of the links in BB code or message board format. It does let you upload an image and get a plain http URL for it, which I'm guessing will work if folks don't mind taking a moment to copy/paste the URL from your post into their browser. For actual embedding and display you need either "bb code" or an html tag, i.e. adapt the http address with href= (etc -- it's hard to describe it here without creating an actual tag, which would not display as a tag but as the image!). Anyway I have also used Photobucket, to upload images and create that href= tag I mentioned, but they now seem to have limited free functions too. When I can I will work up a new set of tips on this, and post it. But I bet that the service you're talking about will work too. Thanks again for the auction info, and big congrats on your excellent purchase!

Re: Peter Falk raincoat

OK I found a site that will easily let folks here upload an image AND get the right kind of link for this forum, AND does not even require registration or an email, etc. I don't know anything else about it, but it seems OK.

https://imgbb.com/

After uploading an image you can click on the "Embed codes" drop'=down menu, and select "html fully linked". This will create the full html link that you can copy from the box and paste into a Forum message.

I just tried it and it looked good in Preview!

Re: Peter Falk raincoat

Thanks Ted,
I’ll look at it when I free up.
Want to hear something interesting?
Last night while looking at the items (I just picked them up Monday) the shoes are custom made, so is the shirt and suit incidentally, however regarding the shoes you’ll surely remember Ward Fowler and his kept secret, well, it appears Peter as it relates to Columbo had the same secret because there are custom cork inserts which raises the height an additional 2”. I bet dimes to dollars even Mark Dawidziak didn’t know that.

Re: Peter Falk raincoat

Heh, that is interesting, Paul!
