Fade in to Murder, shoes

Hello everyone,

I am watching again all the series and each time, even after watching episode one hundred times, I see new things which interest/bother me :)
This time it is about Fade in to Murder. It is said that Columbo gets one of his crutial clues by seeing Ward Fowler's shoes. That they make him look taller on the screen. But what difference does it make? Columbo sees Fowler everyday and he can easily notice his real heightm without checking his shoes. He knows from the begining that Fowler is not so tall in reality. So can anybody explain why those shoes are a clue?

Re: Fade in to Murder, shoes

and one more thing I discovered - in the scene where Columbo watches the shark from The Jaws (haha), he already has a circle made by chalk on his raincoat, even though the scene of making it was later on :)
