In general, I don't like that episode much for some reasons so in here maybe I will point what I like and what I dislike:
What I dislike is:
1. The murderer and his chemistry with Columbo. I just don't like gen. Hollister in any possible way, he is not funny, not interesting, his pick up lines for the lady are ridiculous for me and lot more
2. The gotcha moment. Makes not much sense for me, has no atmosphere. Just don't like this moment. And Columbo could just ask earlier on if a duplicate was indeed ordered and made. And the case would be closed
3. Normally Columbo finds smart clues one by one, but in this episode I don't feel it that much
4. I really like (and don't believe) this whole romantic story between General and Helen Stewart
5. And finally - I didn't know it for many years, but at certain point I read about this quarrels between Peter Falk and Universal at that time, and that he refused being on the set, and then I really noticed that in some scenes when he is seen from behind, it is a double, and not Falk himself, which makes the "atmosphere" of the whole episode much more bitter for me
What I like is:
1. The music in the opening scene. This is maybe the best part of episode for me
2. The atmosphere of settings - marina, yachts, nice weather. I like this
Couple more small points:
1. I never understood what was exactly the reason for murder. What about those contracts? What this construction company had to do with it?
2. "I'll secure your stern" <-- one of best lines in this episode :D
3. What means "dead weight"?. As I know it has a couple of meanings?
4. When the two guys are taking off the nails from the crate, the two nails were really close to each other :P
5. Always makes me laugh when Columbo is inspecting the content of crate (really white uniform, well folded), with his cigar lighten above it
6. The party next to the swimming pool seems to have a nice atmosphere, and Columbo's reaction on it is nice :)
7. Noticed for the first time: when Gen. Hollister visits Helen for the first time, he asks directly for Mrs. Stewart. How could he know that it was her? He was only told that two women were sailing, Mrs Stewart and her mother, but he was never told who reported the shooting. Funny I never noticed that before
8. Columbo says that he checked on Colonel Dutton booked a plane to Switzerland. And previously this Dutton guy said that "they will never find me". Looks like he didn't make a lot of effort to hide his flight to Switzerland
9. It's kind of coincidence that Bert is showing war trophies to Columbo at this particular time
10. I have mixed feelings about Helen in the end. On one hand I feel sorry for her, how she is treated by her mother, nobody believes her, her husband didn't treat her well, we don't know the real intentions of Hollister either, in the end she feels totally betra*** and alone. So that's sad. She didn't have any bad intentions. On the other hand I don't like her sharp attitude to Columbo who is nice to her. But mostly I feel sorry for her
#1 of other... Col. Dutton who was in charge of "supply" was in cahoots with Gen. Hollister in that, Hollister got a lot of construction contracts because Dutton awarded him the contracts even when he wasn't the lowest bidder for money kick-backs, It was something to that effect and Dutton told Hollister he wouldn't mention Hollister's name if asked. There was an investigation about to start in which they could both go to prison, Hollister didn't want to take a chance on Dutton not mentioning his name, he could loose everything and go to prison, so he shot him
