Etude in Black comments

1. One of best things to me here are locations. Hollywood Bowl and other parts of LA. Gosh how much I would love to make trip someday in my life and visit LA and as much places where Columbo was filmed as possible. Or at least one. Maybe this dream will some day come true
2. A little personal remark – I like when Chopin is mentioned so many times in different Columbo episodes. Chopin is our national treasure (even though a lot of people think he was French). Here we even have a bird with this name :)
3. Don't quite understand Alex's answer when Jenifer is saying: „I was feeling all the hairs on the back of my neck”. He answers: „That's just sex”. Hmm, I'm not following :P
4. I think such a hit with an ashtray would leave more serious damage than than alleged hitting her head over the oven
5. Indeed conducting made by Cassavetes here is far far from real conducting
6. So... did anyone replaced Jeniffer at the concert eventually? I think her absence would make some influence on concert
7. Once I was watching this episode with my family, and when I said Blythe Danner is the mother of Gwyneth Paltrow all of them said: „indeed! She looks identical!”. But I don't see much of resemblance honestly :)
8. I don't predict a bright ***ure for Audrey. Or at least her ***ure boyfriends :P
9. When Janice tells Alex „you know her telephone number by heart”, he answers „I know a lot of numbers of people I work with by heart”. I always think she should say: „so give me 5 examples of those numbers that you know”. Then he's triggered :D Pity she didn't do it
10. Again (but that's nothing new) – the main door to Alex's house is different from inside and from outside
11. This episode contains one of my favourite scenes ever: conversation between Columbo and Alex at the mechanic's place. First of all Columbo says „What if she didn't commit suicide?” and then Alex says something like „I couldn't sleep, I was thinking exactly the same thing”. Columbo is laughing and saying „No kidding”. Alex says „but I rejected the idea”. Then Columbo instantly changes his face expression to very serious and asks „Why is that?”. But that face expression, reaction.. Peter Falk is so incredible in this scene!
In the same scene Alex tries clumsily to explain about artist's soul, „they go up, and they go down down down, and they get distraught, they get full of emotions, they get unable to cope with anything. And we don't realise it until it's too late”. Columbo listens patiently with a little smile, and when Alex finishes he changes his face expression to totally unconvinced and says „yeah”. Again brilliant moment by Peter Falk. And in the same conversation – just when they start, Columbo holds Alex's arm, then he takes his hand off his arm, and then Alex makes a gesture as if he were brushing the dust off his sleeve. Very funny :D. Also in the end Columbo says about the bird and says „very strange”. The way he says it is also wonderful. So I love this whole scene from beggining to the end
12. In the same scene Alex says „now I have confession that I'd like to make” but Columbo interrupts and says „May I tell you something?”. I always wonder what confession Alex wanted to make
13. Another very funny line made by Columbo: Mike is asking him what exactly is wrong with his car and Columbo answers: „I think the engine is missing” :D
14. The typewriter thing. Columbo brings it and explains his doubts. That second „S” doesn't match the frst one. Alex says – it's because you put the paper here again. Columbo denies: „that paper is just the way we found it. That paper has never been touched”. And then is my hesitation: if it had never been touched – how did Columbo know that the „second „s” will not match the first „s”” if he never tried this before? He said the paper has never been touched...
15. There is also mistake in that scene. Columbo says: „Why would a suicidal woman type a goodbye note, put it in the machine and take it out again?”. He should have said „Why would a suicidal woman type a goodbye note, put it OUT of the machine and PUT IT IN again”. So the opposite
16. I like very much the scene when Paul Rifkin talks with Janice's mother and Columbo is in the room too. No particular reason but this whole conversation is very well acted and it is always a pleasure to me to watch it again
