Many of us can watch Columbo episodes over and
over and still enjoy them even though we know
the story because there are always new things
to see and enjoy.
I was just watching "Publish or Perish" again and
I notices two fabulous scenes I had never paid
attention to before.
In one, publisher Riley Greenleaf (Jack Cassidy)
is sitting in a movie screening room watching
a film when Columbo enters and interrupts him.
Before Columbo comes in, we see Greenleaf's
face as he watches the film which we never
see. Now, we have been informed that Greenleaf
puts out sleazy books, so knowing this and
watching the salacious looks we understand
that he is watching a porno flick. Cassidy
played that scene beautifully with his
animated face making those lustful faces!

The second was another scene where Columbo
goes to Greeleaf's office. Columbo first
stumbles on a photo studio where they are
taking a picture for a book cover. A man
is holding a girl in his arms. The photographer
tells him to hold her closer, but she is complaining
that he has a bad odor! Then Greenleaf shows
up and ask Columbo what he is doing there.
While they are talking, they are standing in
front of two posters advertising books his
firm puts out. One shows a picture of a
"busty babe" with the the title of the book
"My Home Was a House" (wow!). The second
has the title IIRC "Modern Aztec Courtship
Rituals". It has a picture of a girl with
her arms around one of those idols the
Aztecs made of their bloodthirsty deities.
I burst out laughing when I saw that. One
of my kids asked what was so funny---I told
them that considering traditional Aztec culture
and religion disappeared 500 years ago thanks
to Hernan Cortes' conquest of Mexico, I don't know
how "modern" those "courtship rituals" are and that also considering
that they performed human sacrifices to those
idols, it is bizarre to show a girl hugging
one of the idols. Whoever thought of that
has a really great, subtle, bizarre sense of humor!
Did anybody else in the group notice this?

It was/is a standard way of selling boring books to people. Stick a scantly clad female on the front of anything and some men will buy it without even seeing what its about. Must be awfully disappointed when they get home[:))

That was one heck of a learning experience I got from your post! Wow!

I did just post on another thread about Greenleaf watching that Porno flick...one of the sleaziest scenes in all of Columbodom! Jack pulls it off great!

By the way Cass. I think you could have worded your last post a bit better. Commenting on the type of film being watched then typing "Jack pulls it off great"

Maybe its just me but I got a chuckle out of it
