There is a subtle allusion to "The Gdfather" in
"Candidate for Crime" where Columbo is being
treated by an Italian dentist who keeps talking about
how all Italians are suspected of being in the Mafia.
He uses the word "Mafia" several times. I believe this is the writer criticizing the "political correctness" that Italian-American organizations were pushing on the entertainment industry not to use the word "Mafia" since it is demeaning to that ethnic group. The irony is that the ultimate movie about the
Mafia, "The Gdfather" doesn't mention the word "mafia" a single time because Francis Ford Coppola bowed to this pressure.

It should be noted that the work "mafia" was used in GFII, at the Senate hearing for Mike.
I think the obvious connection would be that one of the five crime families was modeled after the real Columbo crime family of New York.
I think it is worth mentioning also that Peter Falk is Jewish, as is Abe Vigoda, who played Tessio.
I knew you wouldn't be able to resist posting on this one Peck!
And yes, I had forgotten about that mention of "mafia" in the Senate hearing.
Ahhh the 5 families!!! That is how I refer to my family. I am one of 5 sisters...and I always use that expression when I am talking to people about us all getting together for holidays and such. "All the 5 families were there."

Now theres a "family" I could get interested in .
I can just picture the 5 sisters sitting around a conference table dressed to kill in black, sipping champange .
Yup...we all wear a lot of black...but not like the old Italian ladies...not like the ones who follow Michael Corleone and his soon to be wife as they are taking a walk!! Me and my sisters look pretty sexy and chic in black...um...if I may say so myself!! And we also all love champagne!!
Come on Cass, you know I wasn't fantasizing the long black dresses . I was thinking more of slinky black cocktail dresses with plunging necklines, with black stockings and stiletto heels

Well...then you know what my sisters and I look like when we get together!!!!! I don't know about the stiletto heels...but everything else seems to be on target!
Whens the next get together? I will bring the cannolis.

Here's a trivia question:
My four all-time favorite shows are: The Twilight Zone, (Original) Star Trek, Columbo, and M*A*S*H; name one performer that appeared in at least one episode of each.
It's fun to see how all these actors guest-starred on all those shows during the '60s. Donald Pleasence -- "Any Old Port in a Storm" -- my all time fave; TZ, yup. MASH and ST -- not that I know of. Bill Shatner -- good guess...TZ, Columbo, and ST...but no MASH. I know this is goofy...it's one of those things you do to try to get to sleep when you're wide awake. Came up with the answer withOUT the internet.
I prefer the regular original white cream. I am a purist at heart.
We used to have some great Italian bakeries up in north Jersey where I used to live....but now living down at the shore, there aren't too many around here.
Funny story...my mother-in-law (who is Italian also) once tried out a recipe for cannolis. Only she used ice cream cones!!!! Her brother-in-law mocked her out like crazy!!
North Jersey?! I'm assuming we're not talking about an island in the English Channel. Best pizza on the face of the earth -- if they ain't laundering money...it ain't good pizza. Trivia: which NJ county borders the most other NJ counties. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)
James...hint??? I have to go to bed soon and I know I will be laying there staring at the ceiling and thinking about this. Please don't do that to me!!
Well you obviously have NJ pegged....yup the pizza is great here....
The county? Is it Bergen?
Darnit!! now you got me thinking about 2 questions!! my head is going to explode!
Thanx...and I didn't cheat..I promise you that.........Now I can go to bed in peace....hope you have a good day in class. I'll think about that NJ county in my dreams.
Yes...but I hadn't realized there was much "neat trivia" about the Garden State!!
Just joking...I love Jersey...it gets rapped too much...but it is a great place to live.
Hey, the first TV broadcast originated from Bell Labs in Hanover Township (Whippany).
[I believe it was the original pilot for Columbo – entitled “Like Taking Candy from a Baby”. A very youthful Peter Falk crawled around in a wrinkled diaper with a cigar-shaped pacifier trying to solve the crime.]
You are quite right -- even though Mason and Dixon didn't survey thru NJ. But judging by the amount of CSA flags I encountered when I lived down yonder that way...
I’ve been called that before…but nobody ever specifies what kind; frankly I’m partial to pistachios.
Why do I know so much about New Jersey? It’s because I don’t have veins, arteries and capillaries – my body is nurished by 80, the GSP and, on & off ramps.
Ahh Joisey 'Matoes..our crowning glory! Whatever happened to that big dispute about it being the state veggie/fruit?? Our tax dollars were being spent "wisely" on that issue!!
And I hat the "circles"...thank heavens they are fading...they are so scary to drive on!
There are 2 sure fire ways to negotiate Joisey traffic circles:
#1-Like a Kamikaze, just keep going, don't stop and you will make it safely, unless someone else is using the Kamikaze tactic.
#2-Like a running back, just pick up your blockers and let them make room for you. This one is a little safer, but takes some fancy "footwork" to get off.

Both ideas scare me to death! No one who is driving on those circles seems to know who has the right of way! It is insanity! And then we wonder why Jersey has such high insurance costs!!
Thats my point exactly! So if you have a plan when you enter the circle, you will survive the experience. In either case you keep moving, because its harder to hit a moving target.
