Re: Tues, April 18: Dawidziak on live "call in" show!
I never was able to get the "live" broadcast -- odd, since I'm usually pretty adept, for a non-techie, at such things. But Mark answered the question that I emailed, and I've heard the podcast from the ksav.org "Talking Television" archive.
What a delight, to hear such an extended discussion of "Columbo" by people who really, really know their "Columbo"! I was proud to "know" all of you who participated, by phone and by email.
Re: Tues, April 18: Dawidziak on live "call in" show!
My favorite part of the show, apart from hearing your names and voices:
Mark's anecdote about the time Columbo's co-creator, Bill Link, was playing Trivial Pursuit, and he got the old "What is Columbo's first name" question....and the game said that he got got it wrong!
I thought I knew all about that Trivial Pursuit thing (even went to the law library to look up the case), but the William Link story was new to me.
(For those who don't know the background on this, see our Scrapbook article, "Columbo's First Name and the United States Supreme Court -- the Phillip Columbo Story".)
But the whole broadcast -- or podcast -- was a hoot.
Anyone who's interested can go to KSAV.ORG and follow their Podcast instructions, to download a free program that can capture the whole show to your computer (or to your iPod) as an mp3.
Re: Tues, April 18: Dawidziak on live "call in" show!
Firstly....Ted thank you so very very much for letting us all know about this. I had so much fun last night! As I said in the other thread, that was the first time I have ever called a radio station and I was so glad I got up the courage to make the call. I was thinking of you when I dialed the number...and I said "Courage, Carleen, The Grand Maestro will be listening!" (I know..I'm out of my mind!)
And Headache, I listened to it again today...and I don't care what you say....I sounded like a moron!!
Re: Tues, April 18: Dawidziak on live "call in" show!
Well Cass, you certainly did not sound like a moron, but I will admit that, as you said yourself, you do have a New Jersey accent (although I would not think to call it "out of control," as if it were some dangerous runaway juggernaut, about to destroy all in its path!)
I was thinking that your broadcast debut might be an opportunity to show outsiders that New Jersey people do NOT have accents, but...well, actually sometimes they do. :^) Not that there's anything wrong with that.
You have a "real" New Jersey accent, not at all like what outsiders THINK a NJ accent is. Having moved from NJ to a different region of the country, I am still surprised when people can't believe I'm from Jersey, because I don't say "Joisey". As you know, they only talk like that in a few places like Joisey City, er Jersey City. Heck, Jack Nicholson is from New Jersey, and everybody knows what he sounds like.
Quick story: One time I was in a pub in Cardiff, Wales, and the natives, in their natural curiosity, needed to know where I was from. When I told them I was from New Jersey, they all insisted on hearing me say "How ya DOOin'?", so I humored them. Guess they got that from "The Sopranos" or something. Made their day.
Also, Dave really sounds like he's from Philadelphia! (Just kiddin', Dave.)
Re: Tues, April 18: Dawidziak on live "call in" show!
Well, if I can stop laughing for a second I should be able to type this! But everytime I see how you said that about 'some dangerous runaway juggernaut' I just can't help but to crack up!
Yes, people from Jersey City and West New York and Hoboken and towns like that in Jersey definitely have given the impression that we all say 'forgeddabowdit' all the time, and that all Jerseyites talk that way. But true Jersey people like me and you know better.
And I loved your story about Wales. That is my favourite country...and Anthony Hopkins is from Cardiff....and that is who Mark said would be the ultimate Columbo murderer! And I absolutely love Anthony Hopkins. I know you know this, but he almost made it as a Columbo murderer but he had obligations to make a movie instead.
Just thanks again Ted for making us aware of this program... it was a hoot for me too!
And for anyone who wasn't able to listen to it, I encourage you to check it out....you will definitely enjoy it.
Re: Tues, April 18: Dawidziak on live "call in" show!
yes, laura, it's carleen. thanks for the compliment...but i stand by my original opion!!
and do you really have that on your computer?!?! that is just great! anthony hopkins is such a great actor... although some of the movies he has done recently are really kind of yucky.
Re: Tues, April 18: Dawidziak on live "call in" show!
Ted, is this nutty or what? While you had trouble listening to the actual "broadcast" of the show, but have now listened to it from the archive, I had no trouble listening to the broadcast, but now cannot get the archive to run properly. I had missed the first half hour. Oh well.
Re: Tues, April 18: Dawidziak on live "call in" show!
Headache, I didn't save it using a simple right-click, and haven't really tried that. But, with a little (not too much) trouble, I was able to save the mp3 using the instructions at the Podcast link at www.ksav.org.
I downloaded and installed the first of the free softwares that they list (which was called iPodder when they created the link, but now it's called Juice).
Farther down on the Podcast page, you'll see the URL that has to be pasted into Juice for the "Talking Television" archive -- it ends in .xml.
In Juice, basically: on the Subscription tab, click the green "+" button to add a subscription, then paste in the URL (the xml one that I mentioned, not a .mp3 link), then Save. This brings up a list of all of the "Talking Television" shows in the archives.
Put a check next to the one you want, then click the little blue download button. It will take a while to download, because it's 86 MB. After it's downloaded, you might have to do a search to find it -- I think Juice puts in in a subfolder that it creates in My Documents.
Re: Tues, April 18: Dawidziak on live "call in" show!
Thanks, AJ. The mistake I made was to paste your URL into my browser, and go there. Which made the mp3 play, but did not give me a chance to Save it.
This time, instead, I right-clicked on http://www.ksav.org/audio-archive/ksav-talk-041806.mp3 right there in your email message -- and that let me choose to Save it. Works great! Thanks again.
