'Columbo and the fruit bats'

In Murder in Malibu there is a scene where Columbo goes up in the cherrypicker and a flock of creatures flies over and he says 'What the hell was that?' and the worker tells him it is a flock of crows, well when I saw them I thought they were fruit bats by the way they flap their wings and I have never seen crows flying in a swarm like that, also the worker said they are nesting here but I have never heard of crows nesting in a colony, only that other member of the crow family - the rook, which nest in a 'rookery' Maybe American crows are different to the ones in England?

Does anyone know anything definate about these creatures in the film?
