If I remember correcctly, the railing had a panel behind it, so if it had got blown off, it wouldn't have gone into the water. What concerned more about this particular scene was how a perfectly good mattress was ruined by the act of Danziger firing the revolver into it!

that's hysterical! i thought the same thing!! and also, what kind of a crap mattress was it that columbo was able to tear away at it so easily??
c crisp, i cringe every time i see that scene where columbo places the bullet on that ledge! the wind is whipping wildly and the proof is in looking at columbo's and danziger's hair! it is truly amazing that the bullet didn't blow away!

All I can say is that it it's a good job William Shatner wasn't playing Danziger, otherwise in that scene the wind would have blown away his wig!
LOL Cass. If that mattress is anything like the ones in many motel rooms, the simple act of shooting a slug into it would cause it to Pfffffttttt and sail off into the sea in a storm of feathers.
