SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich's top education officials planned a meeting today to discuss policy priorities - but didn't want too many people to know about it.
The State Board of Education canceled the meeting last night after The Associated Press questioned whether the board had followed the state Open Meetings Act.
A December 8th memo obtained by The A-P tells board members that the meeting would be announced quote--``as late as possible''--and that a telephone line usually provided for the public to call in and listen would not be available.
It was to involve Blagojevich's top education advisers and state board members to discuss the governor's order that they develop a ``major policy initiative'' for 2005.
Spokeswoman Becky Watts describes the memo as a "clerical error" and says the A-P's questions led the board to reschedule the meeting with proper publicity.
