Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak confirmed Sunday that Oscar Taveras and his girlfriend were tragically killed in a car accident in the Dominican Republic on Sunday.
Details are sparse at the moment, all that is known is that Taveras was driving with his girlfriend when his car veered off the road. Wet roads may have played a role in the accident. The 22-year-old outfielder and top prospect was set to compete for a starting job in the Cardinals outfield in 2015. Our deepest condolences go out to the Taveras family and the Cardinals organization during this difficult time
I had Oscar on my minor league list for several years... He and Singleton both finally came up to the majors and both failed in their first attempts at being a Major League Player. Both were cut by the Maine a couple of weeks ago. I also had Daryle Kile of the Cards when he died in his sleep in the middle of the 2002 season. I don't have a good track record. May Oscar Rest In Peace.
