Well he finally said where he wants to go (NYY or LAD). Both teams are fighting to get under Luxury tax so they have not been overly interested. This could come down to playing chicken and who gives in first. Will Stanton really want to play 3 more years until he can opt out with Marlins after they blowup the rest of the team by trading Yelich and Ozuna or would he rather spend 3 years with StL or SF?
That said, with his injury history, would he assume he will do well enough to even plan on opting out and killing the remaining years of his very fat contract. Last year was the first year he really earned that kind of money. He has only played as 124 games 3 times in 9 years.
I doubt that Stanton goes to the Yankees just because the Yanks are trying to stay under the luxury tax threshold this season in anticipation of being a player in the monster free agent class of 2018. Plus the Yanks don't have a real need in the OF with Hicks, Gardner, and Judge.............plus Elllsbury's albatross contract. They are in need of starting pitching way more than another outfielder.
