Whenever the Dahomey people of West Africa catch sight of a rainbow or a certain iridescent sparkle on the surface of the sea, they believe they may have seen a glimpse of the great Rainbow Serpent, Da, after whom they are named. This mighty cosmic creature is both male and female, an its colours reflect this, beginning with a blue masculine head, then ranging through all the colours of the rainbow to its red, female tail.
