The ABC' s of Magical Creatures - F is for ...

Hi All,

From A-Z, magical creatures abound. This forum might be a great place to learn about them. I thought I'd summarize one daily from 'The Element Encyclopedia of Magical Creatures' (feel free to join in or comment).

Fafnir
One of the great dragons of Norse and Teutonic mythology. Farnir, whose name means ‘the Embracer,” was one of the three sons born to the dwarf Hriedmar – the others were Otr and Regin. According to Norse myth, the trickster god Loki mistook Otr for a real otter and accidentally killed him. Loki promised to fill an otter’s pelt with gold to make amends to Hriedmar (Otr’s father). However, amongst the treasure he hid a ring that brought its owner not only wealth but eternal misfortune. Fafnir fell under the spell and craved the gold so greatly that he conspired with his surviving brother Regin to steal it from their father (Hriedmar) but in the process they killed him. Fafnir did not wish to share the treasure, even with this brother, and he fled to Gritaheid, where he lay down on the hoard and changed into the most hideous wingless dragon...or worm.
