Valkyrie
The Valkyrie, whose name means “Choosers of the Slain,” were the swan maidens of Norse mythology. They came down from Valhalla, afterlife of the bravest of Norse warriors, and collected the souls of the valiant slain, bringing them home to paradise, where other maidens awaited to serve them ale. The name Valkyrie is derived from the Scandinavian word “valknut,” meaning “knot of Vala” (vala being the female rulers of human destiny). Thus, the Norsemen chose their fates through their deeds on the battlefield.
