Away From The Numbers

All good things come to an end. Or so they say. AFTN has been around since 1989, first as a fanzine and then making the jump to a website and forum in 2003. We've been through the many ups and down at East Fife in those 12 years but policing the forum has become a giant pain in the ass in recent years. As such, we made the decision not to renew it when it expired.

The forum is no more and will remain as a locked archive until it is eventually deleted by the host. We're looking in to try to save some of the content as an archive.

This is not the end of AFTN though. The site will continue and will be revamped and return in its full glory for the start of the 2016/17 season. Maybe even sooner. There will be a comment sections and possibly even a new, registered forum. Check our Twitter (@aftnwebsite) for all the latest info and we'll also post in on the EFFC memories Facebook page.

Until then, have a last browse here, thanks for all your support over the years, and 'Mon the Fife.

EAST FIFE knew they had a mountain to climb in the second leg of the third division play-off final against Queen’s Park.

But the Fifers failed to even reach base camp in a match which saw the Spiders ease their way to a place in division two.

Bayview boss Dave Baikie conceded Queen’s deserved their win but, after leading the division for four months at the start of the season, expressed disappointment with the result.

He admitted a win after Wednesday’s 4-2 setback would have been a big ask, but added, “At the same, time we felt that getting the first goal would have a major effect on our mentality.

“On Wednesday night we scored a goal which we felt was wrongly disallowed and the whole concept of the two ties changed.

“I’m not taking anything away from them. Over the piece they scored seven goals against us and four against Arbroath and they deserve to go up.

“There were only ever two teams top of this division—us for the first four months then Berwick for the second four. That’s disappointing.”

Queen’s effectively ended the Methil men’s dreams within four minutes when Paul Paton hammered home a superb strike from 25 yards.

Alan Trouten made it 2-0 for the visitors when he netted a David Weatherston cut-back in 74 minutes, and substitute Frankie Carroll compounded the Fifers’ misery when he broke free and sent Robert Dunn’s cross soaring into the net with less than a minute to go.

Only Paul Walker really came close to scoring for East Fife, five minutes before the break, but his effort was easily gathered by Spiders keeper David Crawford.

Baikie agreed Paton’s goal killed the match for his team, but added, “We battled away and I thought for a good length of time we probably had more possession.

“The two goals we lost late on were down to us flinging everyone forward and bringing on players to try to get something out of the game.

“But Queen’s Park were the better team and they deserved to get through.”

Jubilant Spiders boss Billy Stark hailed his players “incredible performance” throughout the season.

“We’ve broken club records that have stood for 140 years to get promotion,” he said.

“The result over the two games against a team of East Fife’s stature is terrific but I think it’s deserved.

“The standard of the performance produced in these four play-off games was unbelievable.

“The football they played, the goals they scored and the resilience they showed against big, strong teams was absolutely fantastic.

“I’ll bask in the fact we deserved to get promotion.”
