Away From The Numbers

All good things come to an end. Or so they say. AFTN has been around since 1989, first as a fanzine and then making the jump to a website and forum in 2003. We've been through the many ups and down at East Fife in those 12 years but policing the forum has become a giant pain in the ass in recent years. As such, we made the decision not to renew it when it expired.

The forum is no more and will remain as a locked archive until it is eventually deleted by the host. We're looking in to try to save some of the content as an archive.

This is not the end of AFTN though. The site will continue and will be revamped and return in its full glory for the start of the 2016/17 season. Maybe even sooner. There will be a comment sections and possibly even a new, registered forum. Check our Twitter (@aftnwebsite) for all the latest info and we'll also post in on the EFFC memories Facebook page.

Until then, have a last browse here, thanks for all your support over the years, and 'Mon the Fife.

Dick Smith, East Fife player 1963

Out for a run in the car today, I found myself taking a look round Abernethy Museum (really interesting wee place, by the way!).
I was mildly surprised to see as one of the exhibits a picture of Abernethy born Dick Smith in action for East Fife against Rangers in a league cup quarter-final tie (there's a co-incidence!) at Bayview in September 1963 when we drew 1-1 (the museum had the photo as taken in 1961, but although we did play Rangers in 1961, Dick wasn't signed until 1963).
Dick played for the Fife for just over a year at both centre forward and right-back. He turned out 31 times and scored six goals (not including Fife Cup). Bit before my time - anyone remember him?

Re: Dick Smith, East Fife player 1963

If my old memory serves me well, Smith joined EF from Newburgh Juniors and made his debut as centre forward on a very wet night at old Bayview against Stranraer and scored the only goal of the game. He was converted into an emergency right back after both Stirrat and his replacement (also stopgap) Davy Parker broke their legs. Then my memory fades.

Excellent recall EF.
Dick Smith made his debut on 10th April 1963 away to Morton. He scored a late winner one week later in his first home appearance against Stranraer.
He emigrated to Australia in April 1964.

If it's the Dick Smith I'm thinking of, he was a coach at Newburgh in the late 90's and is now on the committee at Tayport. Really nice guy

Re: Dick Smith, East Fife player 1963

Thanks for the info, guys. I have information that says he signed from Newburgh on 11th April, the day after the Morton game, but he could of course have played as a trialist at Cappielow. Did he then play in the home game against Hamilton on 13th April? If he did then that would mean that the Stranraer game was his third appearance.
Interestingly, he also scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win against Montrose exactly a week after the Stranraer match.

Re: Dick Smith, East Fife player 1963

The team that played Hamilton was:

Donnelly, Stirrat, Orphant, Brown, Young, Walker, Wyles, J. Stewart, Dewar, I. Stewart, Parker.
