Away From The Numbers

All good things come to an end. Or so they say. AFTN has been around since 1989, first as a fanzine and then making the jump to a website and forum in 2003. We've been through the many ups and down at East Fife in those 12 years but policing the forum has become a giant pain in the ass in recent years. As such, we made the decision not to renew it when it expired.

The forum is no more and will remain as a locked archive until it is eventually deleted by the host. We're looking in to try to save some of the content as an archive.

This is not the end of AFTN though. The site will continue and will be revamped and return in its full glory for the start of the 2016/17 season. Maybe even sooner. There will be a comment sections and possibly even a new, registered forum. Check our Twitter (@aftnwebsite) for all the latest info and we'll also post in on the EFFC memories Facebook page.

Until then, have a last browse here, thanks for all your support over the years, and 'Mon the Fife.

Ajax-AZ cup game abandoned - chance for Mike Gill to comment.

Tonight's game was abandoned with Ajax leading 1-0 when a hooligan invaded the pitch and aimed a karate kick at the AZ goalie. The keeper was standing on the edge of the box and somehow evaded the kick and proceeded to kick the shit out of the hooligan before stewards grabbed him.

Lo and behold the ref red carded the keeper and the AZ coach took his players off the pitch and refused to continue. Game adandoned. According to the letter of the law, the ref is correct but given the circumstances nobody seems to agree with it.

Methinks a hefty fine for AZ and also for Ajax.

Sounds like the referee called it correctly.

Re: Ajax-AZ cup game abandoned - chance for Mike Gill to comment.

The ref said in the press conference that the keeper was guilty of violent conduct on the pitch hence the red card. So ,according to the letter of the law, kicking out at anybody/thing on the field of play merits a red card - so including officials, players, hooligans, dugs, the list is endless. The ref said the keeper could have walked away from the incident, after avoiding the attempted karate kick.

BTW the cops reported that a 19 year old ,under the influence of booze and/or other substances , just did it because he disliked the goalie. He is not from Amsterdam but from the sticks, just like 80% of the die-hards.

Mental! The ref is correct, you can't take the law into your own hands, would love to have seen that though. I suppose the keeper could have argued self defense!

I seem to remember a few years ago Brian Clough clouted a Forest fan who had invaded the pitch and got a reprimand for it.

Just watched the incident on You Tube and the guy was lucky that the keeper didn't lay into him even more! He only kicked him in the legs whereas his head would have inflicted the more appropriate punishment!
Big problems coming up for AZ though!

Ha ha crazy dutch bastards. Traveled home and away with PSV for a fair few games and had some hairy moments in Amsterdam, Roterdam and a few other places. The things the dutch get away with are mental and the polis are happy with just giving them a few slaps and throwing them on the first train out of town.

The footage is as above.

Re: Ajax-AZ cup game abandoned - chance for Mike Gill to comment.

The disciplinary committee has rescinded the red card saying that it was a logical reaction to the karate attack but they confirmed that the referee was correct in giving it.Talk about double dutch.

Both clubs must present their reports to the football watchdog by 27th December, once received the watchdog will pass on his report and recommendations to the FA who will announce the verdict on 28th December.

3 possibilities- a) replay the game in full b) play out the remaining 50 odd minutes or c) score when abandoned remains as final score.

Whatever the outcome, one thing is certain. Look out for fireworks in the first game back after the winter break when AZ take on Ajax in Alkmaar. Somehow I think the Mayor of Alkmaar will postpone the game by retracting the licence to stage the game granted to AZ.

Re: Ajax-AZ cup game abandoned - chance for Mike Gill to comment.

Forgot one thing. The hooligan had already been given a stadium ban at the start of the year for disorderly conduct. A mate of his bought his ticket for him so the controls and security measures apparently failed.

As requested!!

You've said it all really. Ref has no choice but to send the keeper off but glad to see this has been rescinded.

Can only imagine if this happened at Kelty or Hill of Beath!!

Re: Ajax-AZ cup game abandoned - chance for Mike Gill to comment.

I played for Oakley at Kelty Hearts when our right winger got into a fight on the pitch with his ex brother in law who was a Kelty fan. Polis lifted the pair and the game continued only thing was the tackles and fights between the two sides were far worse than the original fight!!

In Holland especially Amsterdam the away fans are normally caged or boxed in with nets or plastic shields. each ground has a rail link for away fans only and its used to be a race to get on the train cause if you were left on the platform you were in trouble. Surprised the skin head got as far as he. the trouble in Holland is far worse than any old firm game here even the chanting and songs

Re: Ajax-AZ cup game abandoned - chance for Mike Gill to comment.

my mate lives in Rotterdam, he's a Sparta season ticket holder which is only slightly better than being a season ticket holder with the pars, but I'm veering off track here.

Anyhoo, last year he phones me up in one almighty pissed off mood. He's on the train coming down from the Hague where he works to Rotterdam, except the whole of the train network in the south has been paralized due to feyernoord hooligans putting concrete blocks on the tracks to stop the Ajax supporters trains coming down from Amsterdam.... so they could have a punch up with them.

Holland is a rather nice wee conservative place, except when the fitba's on

Re: Ajax-AZ cup game abandoned - chance for Mike Gill to comment.

The Dutch FA has decided that the game is to be replayed in full on 19th January 2012 behind closed doors in the Arena. No public allowed so what will Ajax do for those supporters who paid good money for tickets for the first game ? No news on that, as of yet.

Ajax has also been fined Eur 10k and received a further suspended 1 game ban. The game being replayed in full was the only viable decision possible according to the FA. Playing the remaining 60 minutes would have meant the the keeper´s red card would have stood, but the watchdog had already rescinded the card so that option was a non starter. The yellow cards given in the game have been scrapped so for the records, the first game does not exist.

Ajax feel very hard done to and want to appeal against the decisions but have neither the funds nor the manpower to get involved in it. Hard times in Amsterdam, sob, sob.
