Away From The Numbers

All good things come to an end. Or so they say. AFTN has been around since 1989, first as a fanzine and then making the jump to a website and forum in 2003. We've been through the many ups and down at East Fife in those 12 years but policing the forum has become a giant pain in the ass in recent years. As such, we made the decision not to renew it when it expired.

The forum is no more and will remain as a locked archive until it is eventually deleted by the host. We're looking in to try to save some of the content as an archive.

This is not the end of AFTN though. The site will continue and will be revamped and return in its full glory for the start of the 2016/17 season. Maybe even sooner. There will be a comment sections and possibly even a new, registered forum. Check our Twitter (@aftnwebsite) for all the latest info and we'll also post in on the EFFC memories Facebook page.

Until then, have a last browse here, thanks for all your support over the years, and 'Mon the Fife.

O/T George

Just read that George who used to manage the Tower Bar has died. An old school man and a character who ran what was a pub locked in the past.

Re: O/T George

More sad news. I`ve known him for years and spoke to him not too long ago.
RIP George.

Re: O/T George

I have fond memories of popping in for a pint or 2 with my Grandad years ago when George ran the Tower Bar. He never put your change in your hand, even with the outstretched arm and palm waiting for the change, always placed the coins on the bar. Kerrianns first experience of George and the Tower Bar was before the Man Yoo game, when she got a can of coke and I asked for a glass with it, Georges response was do you think this is a cafe and he turned away to serve someone else. Some character!

RIP George.

Re: O/T George

My Grandad was standing at the bar when this stranger walked in and asked for a vodka and coke. He then opened the ice bucket and noticed there was no tongs or spoon to scoop the ice out.
He then asked if they had anything for the ice and George`s response was...."where do you think this is...Gleneagles?"

Re: O/T George

Many moons ago at the Tower Bar with my wife, brother in law and his wife. Ordered two pints,a Moscow Mule (popular at the time) and a martini and lemonade.
George's reply was "can the women no just take lager as well"

Re: O/T George

Och aye...ah say, och aye!!!

Re: O/T George

Yep what a guy,one of the few landlords who would serve real punk rockers in the 80s.
After a 20 min discussion about the merits of real hand torches, would then ask you to drink in the lounge.
And the same with me,put your hand out for your change and he would put it on the bar.
Classic.

That is brilliant! As Stew said, the cafe remark was sheer class! Stewart had told me about George and his one-liners before we went so it came to me as no surprise when he said it. Certainly didn't put me off going back!

RIP

Re: O/T George

I have many happy memories of drinking in the Tower Bar, during my late teens and early 20s when it was run by a relative (brother-in-law?) of George's called Eck Ross. Eck was also a character and ran a super pub that was hugely popular and a focal point of the Aberhill community during the 70s.
I think George came to the Tower having previously been in the Denbeath Goth. I also remember the change being put on the bar as well as his catchphrase "Thank you, Ta" when you paid for your drink.
My funniest memory of George was one night when the bar was very busy and a friend who had become frustrated at the wait to be served went outside to the public phone box and phoned the Tower.
George answered the phone and the caller introduced himself following this with his drinks order. George calmly replied with the comment "Yer barred!" before placing the receiver back in the cradle.
