Away From The Numbers

All good things come to an end. Or so they say. AFTN has been around since 1989, first as a fanzine and then making the jump to a website and forum in 2003. We've been through the many ups and down at East Fife in those 12 years but policing the forum has become a giant pain in the ass in recent years. As such, we made the decision not to renew it when it expired.

The forum is no more and will remain as a locked archive until it is eventually deleted by the host. We're looking in to try to save some of the content as an archive.

This is not the end of AFTN though. The site will continue and will be revamped and return in its full glory for the start of the 2016/17 season. Maybe even sooner. There will be a comment sections and possibly even a new, registered forum. Check our Twitter (@aftnwebsite) for all the latest info and we'll also post in on the EFFC memories Facebook page.

Until then, have a last browse here, thanks for all your support over the years, and 'Mon the Fife.

O/T Cruising

I watched a programme last night about the disgraceful way in which staff on cruise ships are treated. I must admit I felt proud knowing that no supporter of EF would sink so low as to to take advantage of this exploitation.

Well this thread was a big disappointment

Didn't see the programme, but I have to say that the cruise lines mainly guilty of this legalised slavery are undoubtedly the big American ones like RCI and Celebrity etc. They pay their staff a paltry wage, and even take a cut from the 'gratuities' which are automatically added to your bill at the end of the trip before they're passed on. Even then, I believe some cruise ships pass on the tips in the form of vouchers which can only be redeemed through the cruise company retail outlets. When I found out what was going on when I sailed with Celebrity, I opted out of their automated tipping system (which they said was to make life easier for ME!!) and tipped the cabin steward / waiters etc. in cash. They deeply appreciated this.
On one cruise we did with P&O we had the company of one of the ships officers each night at dinner, who explained that P&O paid their staff a decent wage so they didn't have to rely on tips. That was why the suggested daily tipping rate was lower than the American ships.
Something to bear in mind if you're thinking about cruising.

Re: O/T Cruising

same in american resturants/hotels. they get poor salary as they are expected to have money made up on tips. its a disgraceful way to treat folk

Re: O/T Cruising

It is not only cruise lines one has to be aware of in regards to tipping.

There are a few establishments in Scotland where the waitress's or waiter's

do not reecive the tip if it is put on a person's credit card.

This subject was brought up in one of our local papers recently, after a

person returned from a visit to Scotland

When possible I always hand the tip to the waitress or waiter.

Re: O/T Cruising

On P&O cruises we found out that the tips added to your bill only went to the restuarant staff and none went to the staff in the buffet dining areas. As we were on freedom dining we used most of the eating places on board. We also split the tips between the different areas instead of them going to the one lot. The cabin stewards were tipped separately and I think they earn it as they are the lowest paid.
