Away From The Numbers

All good things come to an end. Or so they say. AFTN has been around since 1989, first as a fanzine and then making the jump to a website and forum in 2003. We've been through the many ups and down at East Fife in those 12 years but policing the forum has become a giant pain in the ass in recent years. As such, we made the decision not to renew it when it expired.

The forum is no more and will remain as a locked archive until it is eventually deleted by the host. We're looking in to try to save some of the content as an archive.

This is not the end of AFTN though. The site will continue and will be revamped and return in its full glory for the start of the 2016/17 season. Maybe even sooner. There will be a comment sections and possibly even a new, registered forum. Check our Twitter (@aftnwebsite) for all the latest info and we'll also post in on the EFFC memories Facebook page.

Until then, have a last browse here, thanks for all your support over the years, and 'Mon the Fife.

Strange and funny but not haha

After a Game, the postings are both numerous and diverse. We played well in the eyes of some, others say we were shite. But tonight, the lack of responses could mean different things.

We played well so the moaners can't start the usual tirades or we were shite and nobody can be bothered commenting on today's game.

So what was it today? Apart from a few posts on other threads, nought mentioned anywhere.

Re: Strange and funny but not haha

Both teams in first half were very poor with lots of misplaced passes and virtually no chances or saves from either keeper. Again tactics were to blame as a previous poster said, not enough people forward to create anything when ball won in midfield. Second half started the same and Arbroath scored a cracking goal that Patterson had no chance with, I think it also took a slight deflection. After this the Fife brought on two young subs and pushed them up to help Liam and he duly replied with two well taken goals. Then Bobby Linn fooled Mcbride into tripping him in the box, last man-sent off, penalty. 2-2. Very harsh. Mcbrides first sending off in his career. A few minutes later Thom tripped a guy just outside the box and got a second yellow, off. In the dying minutes Patterson brought off two, three fantastic saves to earn a point. Summing up, this was a game for us to take all three points if only the manager had gone with a more attacking minded side from the start. Finally one good note was young Jack Smith came on and was excellent and also one of the youth squad who showed some fearless play.

Trying to work this out myself. The pros are - we have played well - brilliantly in patches against Forfar and Arbroath. Decisions have gone against us. I thought Marvin should have walked last week, if not for the challenge against Ross Brown then for bundling over Jonny Stewart in the box. We got neither. This week, we should have got a penalty first half and want to see their penalty again -http://www.flickr.com/photos/scotsman_in_hawaii/10764971414/in/set-72157637488221753 and http://www.flickr.com/photos/scotsman_in_hawaii/10764961236/in/set-72157637488221753/. The ref ran from a long way back to give it. Thom's sending off I cannot complain about.

I get the formation we play. There is no point in hoofing the ball to Liam Buchanan, so we do need to work the ball there. I do not think we just play 1 up front no more than Spain, who often play with 1 or no recognised strikers do. It is a bit laboured but it does bring out the best in Steven Hughes. The manager must take credit for blooding young players. Jack Smith linked up well with Buchanan and has a bit of pace about him. Lewis Barr had to have enjoyed his run out and didn't look out of place against Paul Sherrin.

The cons - team selection. There is 1 player who gets a start and I cannot work out why. If the manager thinks he is a player, then he is no manager. We were playing with 10 men from the start. Have a read of the Arbroath forum and they identify it. Also, when did we last do anything from a corner? We have a mitt full of full time players and there is no invention at set pieces. We must have had close on 10 corners and did the same thing at every one. When we went down to 9 we were caught 2 on 2 from the keepers clearance. It needed Paterson's triple wonder save to keep a point. Poor organisation.

Overall, I do not think Willie Aitchison is out of his depth on the evidence of the past couple of weeks. I have watched previous East Fife teams crumble in the weeks leading up to a manger's sacking. The play does not show anything like that. We should be achieving more, but it is not for the want of recent effort. I am not convinced either way and next Saturday will be a huge deciding factor even with a threadbare team.
