Away From The Numbers

All good things come to an end. Or so they say. AFTN has been around since 1989, first as a fanzine and then making the jump to a website and forum in 2003. We've been through the many ups and down at East Fife in those 12 years but policing the forum has become a giant pain in the ass in recent years. As such, we made the decision not to renew it when it expired.

The forum is no more and will remain as a locked archive until it is eventually deleted by the host. We're looking in to try to save some of the content as an archive.

This is not the end of AFTN though. The site will continue and will be revamped and return in its full glory for the start of the 2016/17 season. Maybe even sooner. There will be a comment sections and possibly even a new, registered forum. Check our Twitter (@aftnwebsite) for all the latest info and we'll also post in on the EFFC memories Facebook page.

Until then, have a last browse here, thanks for all your support over the years, and 'Mon the Fife.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

Aye Leven Lass I remember all the places same as you. I was a regular at Drennans every Saturday to spend my pocket money then my wages once I started working, the greatest record shop ever. If they didn't have it in stock they would order any record specially for you.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

I think there was a garage with the name of Harris opposite Paterson's fruit shop on Commercial Road,
They had one of the few taxis in Leven when I was growing up.

Also there was a garage on Links Road near the rear of the old Beach Hotel, now the Festivel Gardens

Hutchison's Electric Shop is it gone ????

Buchanan the chemist was on the High Street

I believe there was a ice cream shop on Scoonie Road named Ferdinandi's or some similar name

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

Hutchison's is indeed gone.

Ferdinandi's is still there, and probably run by the same family as when you were last in it, Big Rab. In fact, until quite recently, they were still using the same till with the wee tabs with 6d and thruppence and the like.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

Big Rab the garage you refer to on Links Road was part of the fiat garage on Scoonie Road - Links Garage. My Dad worked there for 35 years.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

the methil pet shop owned by ostler(reltso pet store),the bingo hall in buck hind, gus smarts scrap yard behind the buck&hind the remploy doon buckhind, the slaughter hoose next to nimmos yard, largo lintec, browns sawmill, sliding doon the braes on bread boards, fuck sake i'm showing my age noo.

I can remember climbing over the gates of the sawmill to 'play' in there at night, also remember the sliding down the braes. Kittys shop in Victoria Road Buckhaven and the Community Centre or Old Mans Hut as we called it next to Kittys on the corner. I got caught climbing on the roof by the police when I was about 6 and thought I was going to get arrested!

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

Durie the builder had a garage/yard at Whyterose Terrace. The roof was sloped and you could slide down it because the ASBESTOS became smooth and shiny. Thank goodness for H&S.
The back of the garage looked on to the back of Taylor St (drying greens)and when the grass got cut they would pile the cuttings up at the end of the garage so that you could jump/fall the 12-15ft into piles of grass.

Aye,that is him.

Bloody Hell - that's sad to hear. The end of an era. At least he was still in great fettle, taking the piss (as was his way) when he served me a couple of weeks ago.

RIP, nice manny.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

That is sad to hear!!!

He was a great old guy, I always remember going into Ferdies the night Italy won the World Cup and he was pished as a fart singing at the top of his voice shouting at everybody in Italian (good humouredly obviously) as his wife was trying to drag him through the back!!!

He was probably telling us to GIRUY!!!

BTW his name was Del Forno, The original Ferdies was way back in the 20's when the building was put up!!!

If you look up the side of it you can still see Ferdinandoes carved in the stonework up the corner of the wall, it was probably cheaper to nod your head when people called you Ferdie than to get it removed!!!

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

A bloody hell old Del has passed away?

Stotted in there many a time after a few beers in the Steppy.

Now no Steppy and no Del's.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

No one has mentioned the best shop for eye candy that was CAPITAL FROZEN FOODS. Oohhh the young man in the navy coat who was in charge and his tall friend with slight gingery hair and claimed to be a goalkeeper on east fifes books who hung about the shop at dinner times jim i think was his name.
They had me and my class mates shaking with there tales of saturday nights at the beach hotel and the way i think one was called paul handled his frozen smoked sauceage oooooooooooooooh and teased us with his beef jerky they were the days we always hated having to jump back on the school bus to go back for afternoon periods.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

Fred's Chinese next to Ferdinandi's at Scoonie.

Was licensed to close at 12 but you got in the side door (now a tattoo place) till about 3am. Got Sweet & Sour Pork (known as Pork Baws) or Sweet & Sour Chicken (known as Pork Baws - Chicken wans) then took it up the road and sat in bed eating them at 3am. Then slept fine and no repercussions. These days I have to stop eating about 8pm or my 'bowls' are knackered for days. Okay, too much info.

Btw, is Fred still there. He used to disappear for about 3 years at a time, then suddenly re-appear as if he'd never been away.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

Steak pies at 4 AM at the back door of Deas the bakers bakery.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

I remember that Jed Livingstone bloke, he had a cool scooter and really long hair. All the local chicks used to swarm roond him at the shorehead when he was hanging oot there.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

I remember Eck Marvin he would go about on a scooter wearing his white crash helmet then go fishing on his boat still wearing it,He was also a dab hand on the pinball machine at Jonnies Bingo, sadly he passed away a few years ago.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

I remember Eck Marvin, he was at school with me, he had a twin sister called Beth. I knew Eck had died, wonder where Beth is now? They were cousins of Jeff Marvin who was mentioned in the scooter boys post earlier today.

Beth got married and now lives in Edinburgh somewhere,She married an actor who's claim to fame was he played the barman in Garrnock Way

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

Beth married actor Bill McCabe, who played Harry Murdoch in Garnock Way.
I knew Eck Marvin really well and his Dad Bert - me and Delivery driver used to go out fishing with them back in the 1970's.
Last saw Beth at Eck's funeral, which must be around ten years ago now!

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

Aye I think Fred still stays above the shop with his wife but the shops closed now I think. It used to be Norrie Parky's chip shop if I'm correct. Norries was great I used to frequent it in my youth, playing pinball and listening to "Black Night" by Deep Purple on the jukebox in his cafe. His ice cream was great along with his black pudding suppers.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

What about all the level crossing gates?I will start with four.

1.Starkies Wood.Always used to be shut when I was late for Buckhaven H.S.

2. On the road between the Standing Stone road and Muiredge. The gate keeper had his own wee cottage right by the gates.

3. Coaltown of Wemyss by the Primary School.Gate still there I believe.

4. Station Road,Leven.Station gates.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

I stayed in Buckhind right across from Kitty's shop. She made Kittys "specials"-ice blocks made in old plastic tubs with lollipop sticks in them. They cost half pence. She always asked us to bring back old sticks so she could reuse them. It didn't matter how dirty they were. I wasn't allowed to go in because it was a dirty shop, so my mum said. She used the same shovel to clear the ice from the freezer as she did to clean the dog "muck" from the pavement. I had to send my pals in for me.
If you managed to aquire a breadboard you didn't give it up they were like gold dust.
Cairns shop was round the corner.
What about the newt pond, well disappeared into the sea now.
The cheesecutter at the park at Factory Road. It was green, and the roundabout and the sandpit.I remember every Sunday night having a fine comb put through my hair my mum said she was looking for sand. Didn't matter how long I protested that I hadn't been near the sand pit.
The toilets at the school on the Globe Brae, wasnae allowed in there either told it was where the bad men were.
Anybody remember the tablet Murrays sold?

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

Jed the scooter boy is still gawn aboot, he was a postie for aboot 25 years and had the longest hair I've ever seen on a postie. Now it's shorter but he still dresses like a hippie type but withoot the flares. I think he's retired noo, lucky sod.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

Does Kennoway count as Levenmouth? If so what about Kennoway Road Club, I spent many a happy time out cycling and racing with the boys from the club. AH those were the days. I still remember some of the members, Ron Munro, Colin Carmichael, Derek ?, Mike ?, Bob ?, Bill Mitchell, Gordon Fenton, Jed Livingstone, Eric Corstorphine, Sandy ?, and many more.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

Bike Boy, did you go to the Friday night youth club at the Hall of Culture then across to the church youth club where the disco was in a cupboard? Did you go o'er the Miggie Den when you were wee. Its just a couple o trees noo.I mind there was lots of playing fields outside the swing park. At the swing park the boy who did the gardens used to chase you if you went near his roses . One time the Boys Brigade were in a football match and one of their team got an own goal. It was hilarious cos they all chased the boy off the field and his mum was chasing them and shouting they were to leave her loddie alone. Think he came from Seaton Terrace. Do you mind Ian Methvens van and Brunton the butchers van and Andy the baker from the Store. I think it was Monday you got brown bread.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

I can mind fire watching at the Mill when I stayed in Aitken Place. We used to get the older ones to cover for us so we could go to the dancing at The Jubilee or down the beach to the Go As You Please.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

For those to young to know about the automatic change system in the Coop In the grocery dept. there was an overhead wire system where the clerk put your bill and money in a small container this was sent to the cashier cage and any change that was due was returned
the same way.
The clerk who waited on you had in a way no money to look after or give you your change if any.
At least that is the way I remember it.

I co-wrote (with the Fife Railway Preservation Society) a wee book on the Methil Branch Line about fifteen years ago that contains a sketch-map in the centrefold of the railway lines around the Methil & Wemyss area. Also contains sketch plans that I did of the stations from Methil up to Thornton and some good photos.
See me on Saturday or email me if you'd like a look at it.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

I remember the 2 hovercraft down Buckhynd. Must've been the early 70's. Hundreds of kids all clamouring to get inside. The braes used to be epi-centre of the universe back then. Men poking with cleets for crabs in the rocks when the tide was out. Kids bricking jellyfish and sometimes octupus trapped in the tide pools. Kids all used to have fires down the beach too and chucked asbestos slates and aerosols into the flames. Mind of a dead whale washed up on the beach too along at Wemyss. Seemed to be there for months but probably just a memory trick like summers that were never ending sunshine for weeks on end.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

The Model Lodging House, later to become the Wonder Store furniture dept., was indeed known as the 'Cairngreig Mansion' and, sad Anorak that I am, I can tell you the exact story behind the name.

Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin . . . .

If you look on the opposite side of the road from the 'Model', you'll see there are three quite substantial stone built villas. Once upon a time, when there was little or no housing round about there, they were rather desireable places to live, and had nice views over the Forth. Proposals were then put forward to build a 'Model Lodging House' to accommodate the Navvies that were to be employed on the construction of the new docks.
The owners of the houses objected to the proposals, as they realised that not only was their view about to be blotted out, they would also have to put up with the drunken and rowdy behaviour from the navvies.
The objectors were Mr Cairns, Mr Greig, and the local minister who lived in the adjacent manse.
After a lengthy battle, the objection was eventually thrown out, and the builders of the Model lodging House cheekily named their new building the CAIRNGREIG MANSION after Mr Cairns, Mr Greig, and the Manse.

Here's some o' the 1970's scooter boys in no particular order : Zeke Ramsay, Jim Burns, Gordon Downs, Davy Galloway, Jed Livingstone, Ali Thomson, Gordon Moncrieff, Ron Smith, Alan Love, Jimmy Love, Tony Kwiatkoski, Dave Donald, Fergie frae Lergie, Mike Harrison, Mike Berry, Bert Allan, Drew McGovern, Bill Kidd and his brother (cannae mind his first name), Eric Culbert, Jeff Marven, Rab Scotland, George McCue anybody mind o' any mare?

Not sure they were all scooter boys! Zeke Ramsay (with ginger hair I remember) and Gordon Downs were Jim Burns' pals, but while Jim had a Lambretta, I can't remember if they did. Never heard of the rest, Except Jeff Marven - he had a BSA scooter originally, then a Lambretta Li125 stripdown, then a Jet 200, but he was later than the scooter fashion in general. There was a guy called (something) Harrower with a limp, Ian Wilson, and Jim Bisset from Mountfleurie. Jim had the coolest Lambretta GT200 ever - covered in chrome, none of the silly lights and mirrors stuff though!

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

Of course Zeke Ramsay had a Lambretta, it was a green and orange stripped down machine. As for Gordon Downs, yes he had a Lambretta too, he sold his to the longhaired guy Jed Livingstone.

Yes, a vague recollection of Zeke Ramsay having one now - I remember Zeke lived at the church end of Victoria Road. Don't recall Gordon Downs having one though. Memory fading fast!

No recollection of Jed Livingstone at all, by name or description. I have remembered though, the guy with the limp who had a Lambretta was JOCK Harrower.

Ali Thomson didn't have a scooter as far as I remember, IIRC he was one of the first in the area with a chopper motor bike though.

Don't remember Davie Bruce either..... I did remember some more scooter guys though, Brian Donaldson (Vespa 150) from (I think) Robertson Avenue, Harvey Rae from Addison Crescent (Lambretta GT200) and a third guy always with them whose real name escapes me, but known as "Frill" for some reason, and Jeff Marven's older brother, Jim, who had a Vespa 150.

Come come Bert anyone who was anyone had in those glorious days had a Lambretta. Cannot for the life of me understand how Vespa is still alive and Lambretta is no more. Even an LD was better than a Vespa ( says he who has a vespa 150 hidden away in the garage) The same Jed Livingstone I think ended up with most of them. I can remember giving him a TV175 series 1 for free Christ its worth a fortune now. Hey Jed hope you kept it.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

Hey Balfourboy, who are you? I think I got the TV 175 from Eric or Ian Westwood, is that you? I don't have it anymore as when I moved from Rose Terrace to Glebe Street I had to sell five Lambrettas as I didn't have space to keep them all. I kept my own stripped down Lammy which I sold just 3 years ago to Dave Donald.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

Ali Thomson did have a Lambretta stripped down before the chopper bike, once he passed his test he bought the chopper which was a BSA 650 if I remember correctly? Wish I had taken more photos back then!!!

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

Deadly what a cheek Westwoods!, I gave you one of the rarest Lambrettas made a series I TV Jed,
but their was a Li as well. I bought 3 Lambrettas from those two Pittenweem skin heads A&N Broons but only wanted the one a slime line Li Registration AXA1A and gave the others to you. Now you have ruined a friendship.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

Bleep the dog.

You should have taken the pics Jed cos the memory leaves a little to be desired. Actually it may be representative of the area cos Bugsy Frazer suffers from the same thing and he stayed around the corner from you. Ali also was building a chopper with an Ariel square four power plant used to modify the frame on the night shift at mountflurie.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

The Ariel Square four belonged to Andy Hutt who's dad owned Hutt's, the store that sold everything. I just checked your email and it is for Jim Burns, is it Mountfleurie JB? If so I tried to email you but they keep bouncing back, feel free to email me Jim and see what happens. As for you giving me a TV I really can't remember that at all!!!!! I met Bugsy about a year ago in Sainsburys it seems he's back here living in Buckhaven.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

Well I never being, as a miserable scots bar steward I am devastated at the lock down on the memory. Deadly who has my series I TV? does this have the making of a Discovery history episode. ( hope it's better than the current fiasco with the Myanmar spitfires as a buff this story is driving me insane) Should I come back retrace my steps from the skin heads in Pittenween via Transit van to bygone Leven dropping of the contraband somewhere in the depths of god knows where. Only to find that this icon has been as scraped ? (after all what value had series 1in those days or now in fact ugly buggers )
Come Bert you have listed some of the usual culprits but think they might be a bit long in the tooth by then. Perhaps I should put a reward out for information received. Sadly from all those pics you sent me Jed what an abundance of TV fork's I can only surmise her fait has been sealed and you have not got the heart to tell me she has gone to The big Mod rally in the sky.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

Come come now the greatest and only call to fame for bygone Leven in the late sixties and early seventies has to be the Osborne house and buchhaven dancing forget the rest. We can have some serious comments from these venues and era.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

I am devastated at the lock down on memory. Who has my Series 1 TV. Should I come back and track it down like a discovery program Retracing my steps from the skin heads in Pittenween via Transit van thru the murky streets of old bygone Leven to god knows where. Jed from those pics you sent me all had TV forks and I can only remember a couple of Tv's in the area. Bert can you confirm the TV's were as scarce as hen teeth. I can only summize that you are scared to tell me she has gone to the big rally in the sky.

Have been doing some family tree research and this came up on a google search. Gordon Allan was my great grandfather and lovely to see his shop remembered.

My late father-in-law Bob Hunter worked at Gordon Allan's as a message boy during the war, then served his apprenticeship there. He used to tell me about how butchers back in those days knew how to set out their window display, something he always said was lacking in later years. One of his favourite stories was how on a Saturday afternoon there seemed to be an abundance of sausages to sell before the shop closed, and they had to be sold as the shop would obviously be closed on the Sunday. Gordon Allan put a notice in the window to say the sausages had been reduced to clear - and the result was that nobody wanted to buy them as they suspected there was something up with the sausages (which there wasn't, he simply had a surplus!).
With time running out before the shop closed, Gordon simply changed the sign from "Reduced to Clear" to "Special Recipe" . . and cleared the lot!!

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

Brought back a few memories of lower Methil - had a look on Google street view, and I'm amazed at how much it's changed. The Palace is gone (I remember going to see the Beatles "Help" there, and a James Bond film) and the old police station. New houses everywhere!

I thought I recalled a big set of wide steps going down to Lower Methil which I suppose must be the Waverley Steps from Whyte Rose Terrace to Toboggan Road, but they don't look like how I remembered them. Were there any other steps down to Lower Methil???

Yep, remember the model planes. And the summer mission at the park. If I mind right, the discos at the pavilion were on a Thursday night - Carl Douglas kung fu fighting was an in choon at the time.

The women's football tournie also took place in the park every summer.

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

It as Dod Gillies who had the fish and chip shop next door to the Leven Co-op run by Mr Webster in Paterson Street Aberhill, then there was Lightbody's the bakers and Elsie Davidsons on the corner of Taylor street

Re: Bygone Levenmouth

It was George (Dod) Gillies who had the fish and chip shop in Paterson Street. He lived above the shop. In the same block was the Leven Coop run by Bob Webster then Lightbodies the baker then on the corner Elsie Davidson had a wee shop. Opposite was Peter Horne's dairy which was previously a shoe repair shop - I think Mr Pye. The there was the Methil Coop butcher shop.

Can't believe it's taken me this long to visit this thread. It's a gem - pure dead brilliant. If you want an intimate archive of Levenmouth history, look no further!

Although I'm only a Sassenach incomer (since 1973), I can empathise with many of these posts, especially the one about the record shop in Leven which the old ladies ran. They knew far more about Jimi Hendrix than I ever did!

AFTN site administrator - for goodness sake get this thread archived for the local history society because once it's gone, it's lost forever.
