Away From The Numbers

All good things come to an end. Or so they say. AFTN has been around since 1989, first as a fanzine and then making the jump to a website and forum in 2003. We've been through the many ups and down at East Fife in those 12 years but policing the forum has become a giant pain in the ass in recent years. As such, we made the decision not to renew it when it expired.

The forum is no more and will remain as a locked archive until it is eventually deleted by the host. We're looking in to try to save some of the content as an archive.

This is not the end of AFTN though. The site will continue and will be revamped and return in its full glory for the start of the 2016/17 season. Maybe even sooner. There will be a comment sections and possibly even a new, registered forum. Check our Twitter (@aftnwebsite) for all the latest info and we'll also post in on the EFFC memories Facebook page.

Until then, have a last browse here, thanks for all your support over the years, and 'Mon the Fife.

Re: steve

Hang on - found it now on the FAI website. No mention of it on the SFA one, no surprise there I suppose.

Republic of Ireland 1- 0 Scotland

Palmerstown's Declan Carroll played a captain's part to perfection as he fired home a 70th minute goal that proved to be the only score of an entertaining game at Terryland Park, Galway. The goal provided the Irish with the perfect start to their defence of the Centenary Shield and now sets up their next game against England who also won their opening game of the series.

The Irish had to contend with a solid Scottish side who came out all guns blazing and it was the visitors who had the first chance when they were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position just outside the area. Jamie McDougall fired an excellent shot that Karl Coleman could only parry but his defence scrambled the ball away to safety.

Ireland's first chance came on 18 minutes when James O'Sullivan tried a cheeky back heel but the ball just trickled past the upright. And it was O'Sullivan who found Conor Powell ten minutes later but the Irish player fired into the side netting from close range.

The second half signalled a change of attitude from the Irish and they dominated the early exchanges and they slowly gained a grip on the game. The goal finally arrived on 70 minutes when Powell's free kick from the left found Carroll at the back post and he fired home across the goal into the other corner.

Eight minutes later they had a good opportunity when Timmy Purcell found Darren Forsyth with an excellent cross but his glancing header flashed across the goal.

Scotland came close to equalising when substitute Paul McAulay managed to curl a right footed effort on target but it skimmed wide of the upright. And Forsyth was denied by Jamie Barclay when the goalkeeper dived full length to touch away his shot.
