Away From The Numbers

All good things come to an end. Or so they say. AFTN has been around since 1989, first as a fanzine and then making the jump to a website and forum in 2003. We've been through the many ups and down at East Fife in those 12 years but policing the forum has become a giant pain in the ass in recent years. As such, we made the decision not to renew it when it expired.

The forum is no more and will remain as a locked archive until it is eventually deleted by the host. We're looking in to try to save some of the content as an archive.

This is not the end of AFTN though. The site will continue and will be revamped and return in its full glory for the start of the 2016/17 season. Maybe even sooner. There will be a comment sections and possibly even a new, registered forum. Check our Twitter (@aftnwebsite) for all the latest info and we'll also post in on the EFFC memories Facebook page.

Until then, have a last browse here, thanks for all your support over the years, and 'Mon the Fife.

First debut double since Legs Fleming

From the Scotsman

Scotland debuts' doubles are first since 'Legs' Fleming
KRIS Boyd's double against Bulgaria is the first time a Scotland internationalist has scored twice on his debut since Charlie Fleming of East Fife in 1953.

'Legs' Fleming, so-called because of his gangling gait and his ferocious shot, was a prolific scorer in the 1950s when the Bayview club was one of the leading teams in Scotland, and the inside right was selected for international duty on 3 October 1953. Scotland won 3-1, with Fleming's first goal a trademark 'cannonball' from long range and his second a tidy finish in the penalty box. But just like his East Fife team-mate Henry Morris, who scored a hat-trick on his Scotland debut in 1949 yet was never picked again, Fleming was not given a second chance.

Re: First debut double since Legs Fleming

Having been fortunate enough to see Charlie play he did have a shot like a cannonball and considering the type of footballs nowadays I could easily imagine him scoring from well inside his own half if he was still playing - his only drawback was the ball either screamed into the net along with the goalkeeper if he was unfortunate to be standing in the way of the shot or it ended up hitting the corner flag - either way it was exciting to watch him.

Re: First debut double since Legs Fleming

Funnily enough Charlie was never successful at penalty kicks, he was too close to the target!!
In 1951 Charlie played for The Rest of the UK against Wales in Cardiff to celebrate the Welsh 75 Anniversary. As always he scored with one of his fierce long range shots.

Re: First debut double since Legs Fleming

The website story is wrong. Last player to score a debut double was Ralph Brand of Rangers in 1960. Website story has been corrected to this:

Brand the last player to hit debut double
KRIS Boyd’s double against Bulgaria is the first time a Scotland internationalist has scored twice on his debut since Ralph Brand of Rangers in 1960.

Brand scored twice in the 5-2 win against Northern Ireland on 9 November 1960, and went on to score eight goals in eight games for Scotland.

Before Brand, the previous holder of this particular distinction was Charlie Fleming of East Fife, who scored twice against Northern Ireland on 3 October 1953. Scotland won 3-1, with Fleming’s first goal a trademark ‘cannonball’. But just like his East Fife team-mate Henry Morris, who scored a hat-trick on his Scotland debut in 1949 yet was never picked again, Fleming was not given a second chance.

Boyd’s double yesterday was matched by Chris Burke later in the game, and the last time two Scotland debutants scored twice each was in a 5-2 win against Wales in 1898. James Gillespie of Third Lanark hit a hat-trick, and James McKie of East Stirlingshire a double. And of course … neither played for Scotland again.
