Why is "phonetic" not spelled with an "f"?

Well as phonetics is a branch of linguistic's that deals with the sounds of speech I would assume that it has something to do with the phonectic alphabet invented to make different languages more easily machine readable and understood? Or do you have a different idea?

Phonetic Alphabet is used to spell out letters in place of just saying the letter itself. By using a word for each letter there is less chance that the person listening will confuse letters.
