Away From The Numbers

All good things come to an end. Or so they say. AFTN has been around since 1989, first as a fanzine and then making the jump to a website and forum in 2003. We've been through the many ups and down at East Fife in those 12 years but policing the forum has become a giant pain in the ass in recent years. As such, we made the decision not to renew it when it expired.

The forum is no more and will remain as a locked archive until it is eventually deleted by the host. We're looking in to try to save some of the content as an archive.

This is not the end of AFTN though. The site will continue and will be revamped and return in its full glory for the start of the 2016/17 season. Maybe even sooner. There will be a comment sections and possibly even a new, registered forum. Check our Twitter (@aftnwebsite) for all the latest info and we'll also post in on the EFFC memories Facebook page.

Until then, have a last browse here, thanks for all your support over the years, and 'Mon the Fife.

‘Lack of decent crosses’ hurts East Fife

EAST FIFE assistant boss Graham Irons blamed “a lack of decent crosses” for his team’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of East Stirlingshire.

Irons said, “Fair play to Shire. They played well and I congratulate them.

“The boys are obviously gutted but you don’t become rubbish overnight after sitting at the top of the league for as many weeks as we have and they should remember that.

“We didn’t get it right this time, unfortunately. There was a lack of good passes and we couldn’t maintain possession for long enough either.

“All in all, it was a poor standard compared to previous games, or at least just average.”

The game at New Bayview started dismally with both sides struggling to maintain possession on a wet pitch.

Shire’s Karl Thywissen worried visiting fans when he almost headed past his own keeper, but Anton Nugent acted quickly to tap it over the bar.

The game came alive after that with plenty of chances being created on both sides.

The Fifers looked likely to clinch the opener on 38 minutes when Neil Jablonski was given a clear path to score but his effort went inches wide of the left post.

New signing Stevie Nicholas tried to make his mark at the start of the second half but shot wide from eight yards.

The deadlock was finally broken on 73 minutes when East Stirlingshire trialist Joe Savage, the former East Fife striker, sent the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.

Sub Craig O’Reilly tried to pull one back for East Fife four minutes from time but the ever-alert Nugent was quick to deny him.

The visitors Paul Stewart added a second three minutes from time.

Despite his dismay, Irons did however reserve praise for Nicholas for “a decent debut performance” and also commended goalkeeper Iain Ross for making a “great save” four minutes from time when Shire’s Joe Boyle tried to blast one home.
