Away From The Numbers

All good things come to an end. Or so they say. AFTN has been around since 1989, first as a fanzine and then making the jump to a website and forum in 2003. We've been through the many ups and down at East Fife in those 12 years but policing the forum has become a giant pain in the ass in recent years. As such, we made the decision not to renew it when it expired.

The forum is no more and will remain as a locked archive until it is eventually deleted by the host. We're looking in to try to save some of the content as an archive.

This is not the end of AFTN though. The site will continue and will be revamped and return in its full glory for the start of the 2016/17 season. Maybe even sooner. There will be a comment sections and possibly even a new, registered forum. Check our Twitter (@aftnwebsite) for all the latest info and we'll also post in on the EFFC memories Facebook page.

Until then, have a last browse here, thanks for all your support over the years, and 'Mon the Fife.

Jim Harley

Jim Harley was born in Methil on this day 90 years ago. A full back he signed for Liverpool in 1934 from Hearts of Beath and played 134 times for The Reds in a career that was interupted by the 2nd World War. Jim helped Liverpool win their 5th League title in 1947 but played only 21 times after this.

I beleive Jim guested for East Fife during WW2 can anyone (Jim Corstorphine possibly) confirm and does anyone have any other info? I'm sure my Grandad introduced him to me in Leven when I was young, so presumably he settled back up here.

Re: Jim Harley

Jim Harley was my grandad and he was born on the 2nd February 1917. He did Appear as a Guest player for East Fife During the WW2. He did move back up here to Methil but unfortunatly died in september 1989

Re: Jim Harley

Oh and any chance he guested in any of the East Fife games that The Legendary Bill Shankly played in?

Re: Jim Harley

Sorry about the mix up with the date of birth Jamie, I'd seen it on the Liverpool site www.ynwa.tv as 21/02/17.I think it was in the early 1980's when my Grandad introduced him to me and I knew he'd passed away a while ago. Do you have any info on his time at Liverpool?

Re: Jim Harley

Not alot of detail to give about his time at Liverpool. He played with Bob Paisley, Bill Shankly and Matt Busby. He played full back while at Liverpool and went on to get 3 scotland caps during the war i think. Yeah he did make a guest appearance along side Shankly at East Fife. A will post more info when a get it.

Re: Jim Harley

"Jim Harley was my grandad" - sounds like the name of Half Man Half Biscuit track.

Re: Jim Harley

Thanks Jaimie much appreciated.

I think if he had played for Tranmere KotS, there would be a more of a chance HMHB would have that as a title

Re: Jim Harley

Methil born Jim Harley guested for East Fife during World War 2 and made his debut at Left Back in a 3-0 against Dundee United in a North Eastern League match at Bayview on 5th September 1942. Bill Shankly, who had made his East Fife debut in a 2-0 win against Raith Rovers at Stark’s Park two weeks earlier, played in the same team at Right Half and missed a penalty.
After his brief spell as a guest with East Fife, Jim won two wartime Scotland caps.
He also won the Powderhall Sprint in 1936 running under the name of J.H.Mitchell (Letham).
Unfortunately this is all the information I have on Jim Harley, all of which was obtained from fellow EFFC historian Jim Stewart.

Re: Jim Harley

Cheers Jim. I forgot he had a mention in Alan Kennedys autobiography for winning the Powderhall Sprint.

Re: Jim Harley
