Away From The Numbers

All good things come to an end. Or so they say. AFTN has been around since 1989, first as a fanzine and then making the jump to a website and forum in 2003. We've been through the many ups and down at East Fife in those 12 years but policing the forum has become a giant pain in the ass in recent years. As such, we made the decision not to renew it when it expired.

The forum is no more and will remain as a locked archive until it is eventually deleted by the host. We're looking in to try to save some of the content as an archive.

This is not the end of AFTN though. The site will continue and will be revamped and return in its full glory for the start of the 2016/17 season. Maybe even sooner. There will be a comment sections and possibly even a new, registered forum. Check our Twitter (@aftnwebsite) for all the latest info and we'll also post in on the EFFC memories Facebook page.

Until then, have a last browse here, thanks for all your support over the years, and 'Mon the Fife.

All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Having decided on our formation for the all time East Fife eleven (4-3-3), it's now time to pick the teams, starting this week with the goalkeeping position.

There are two teams. Pre 1970's and post 1970's. You can vote for ONE player for each team.

It's up to you which team you wish the player to qualify for. It may be that they made their debut in the 60's, so you vote for them in the pre 1970's team. They might have played more of their games in the 70's though, so you might vote them in the post 1970's team.

Your choice, but I personally prefer the latter option of what decade they played most of their games for the Club in.

You cannot vote for a player for both teams.

So who would you have between the sticks?

The 1938 Scottish Cup winning goalkeeper James Milton?

A League Cup winning goalie - John Niven, John McGarrity or John Curran?

Ernie McGarr?

Dave Gorman?

Gordon Marshall?

Dean Robertson?!

or someone else.

You have till midnight on Saturday 5th May to cast your votes.

Remember, it doesn't have to be a player you've seen. It's who you feel deserves it.

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Ok, so I'll kick things off with my selections.

Pre 1970's team - John Niven

Post 1970 team - Gordon Marshall

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Spoke to my grandad about that one a while back and he said Niven. Tempted by Ray Charles, but Gordon Marshall is the other vote.

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Should really cast my vote for Gordon Marshall given that he helped us win the Coca-Cola cup. However the vote has to go to Ernie McGarr - the best East Fife keeper I have seen.

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Lindsay Hamilton and Ernie McGarr

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Johnny Niven and Gordon Marshall for me.

PS Zak, both your votes have gone to post 1970's goalies...

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Billy McGann & Gordon Marshall

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

I always preferred Charles to Marshall.

Ray Charles for me. He was in a poorer East F*fe team.

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

I would have to vote for Dave Gorman but Ray Charles was good.

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Dave Gorman and Gordon Marshall

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Niven and Marshall

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Niven & Gorman

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

I went to my first game circa 1972, so I will leave the pre 70's selection to the elder statesmen.
Post 70's Gordon Marshall for me, great keeper for East Fife, who went on to win a Scotland cap. He also cut my hair at his barber's shop in Edinburgh. Decent bloke.

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Where about in Edinburgh is his barbers ?

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

It was in West Maitland Street just across from Haymarket Station. His father, Gordon Snr., had a newsagents on the ground floor, and the barber's shop was in the basement. Don't know if it is still there now.
I believe Gordon is a goalkeeping coach at Hibs.

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Aye, he is and the Hibs' keepers have been dire this season

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Alan Blair

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Gorman & Marshall

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Post 70's - Gordon Marshall

Not old enough to vote pre-70's (honest).

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Just thought I'd give this a wee bump as there's just over 24 hours till the close

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Dave Gorman and Mike Marshall

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Niven and Marshall

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

my votes are davie gorman and lindsay hamilton (17 shutouts in 1 season)

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Niven and Mcgarr

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Milton & Marshall

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Niven & Marshall Has 2b!!!

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

My Grandad used to mention Niven my pick would be Big Gordon Marshall. Saving the pen from McCoist at Bayview in normal time the night we took the Gers to penelties. What a night he had I remeber standing behind the Goal watching him throw himself all over the place to keep the big time charlies out.

Re: All Time East Fife XI - Goalkeeper

Cheers to all who voted.

The winning pre 1970's goalkeeper is John Niven (with Dave Gorman second).

The winning post 1970 goalkeeper is Gordon Marshall (with Ernie McGarr second).
