My company are paying a visit to one of Walney\'s local schools for a history workshop and I googled Walney Island just to find out how long the journey would take. I\'m so glad I explored more and found this site - what an enchanting place, I am very much looking forward to our visit to Walney soon!

Many fond memories of walney , living on the caravan site at West shore , going out with the crabbers , collecting golf balls , finding bullets on the dunes , and watching lapwing chicks hatching out at the data base 1968 , seems a long time ago . Brilliant website .

Reading other people\'s memories of Walney brought mine back as I holidayed in the early 1950s there, camping in a school. Watched the tipping of slag at night; a silvery stream going down the slag hill toward the estuary. We kids were from a Barnardo orphanage home near Kendal. Also saw my first albino bird there - a sandmartin.

Hi
This might be a stupid question - but I\'ve wondered for years about a doorframe in Walney Channel - well it looks like a doorframe- you can only see it at low tide. I wondered if you knew what it was for - if you are walking from the dock museum it is before you get to the wreck, I think. It is something that has been bugging me for a long time!

I\'ve been reading \'Polyolbion\' by Michael Drayton. It was published in 1622. In \'The Seven-and-Twentieth Song\', Walney gets a write up as a sort of sea defence for \'Furnesse\'. I just found the whole section (lines 320-354) describing Walney and the general area interesting, and found this website, which I have found just as interesting.

I am researching the Greenwood families of Northcote, 18th/19th centuries and hoped to find something on your site. They were farmers, landowners and a daughter (Jane?) married a blacksmith, John Kinnish, presumably originally Manx?

Hi, worked at Devonshire dock in 1984-5 on the sub base, spent 15 months living on the caravan park on Walney back then, happy days, sad to see the George has gone and the Periscope name changed, does Mr Wilf White still play the organ Saturday night? is local legend Fred Jackson still on his perch? or spike Leonard still local? ATB Walney, great memories

Things you cannot do on Walney Island, you cannot get on a double decker bus and travel down Thirteen Corner Lane on the way to Ernsie Bay. Memories of doing that as a six year old.

I looked up Walney Island because I saw a copy of my grandfathers birth certificate for the first time today and I see that he was born on the 30 December 1904 and that he lived at 18 Buller Street, Walney. His name was Joseph Denton Cowen and his parents were Joseph William Cowen and Selina Cowen (nee Cruikshanks). Are there any Cowen\'s still living on Walney?

Was trying to look up some information on the Piel and Walney Gravel company as it was a 3 foot gauge railway on the south end of Walney. Does anyone have any information or pictures that they wish to email me? I would appreciate any information.
One of the nameplates carried by one of the steam locomotives exists at Tywyn in Wales in the Narrow Gauge Museum situated on the Talyllyn Railway.
