Although not originally from here I have lived on Walney for the last 17yrs and think it is great. When anyone wants some info I have sent them the link to the Walney website but it seems the site has been forgotten and not updated since 2018 which is a shame as it is very informative. Please keep it updated and not just left. Thanks.

I am researching various plagues and in particular seeking plague stones. These were large stones or boulders that were either of suitable size and with a recess in which to put vinegar, or commandered cross bases from which the crosses had been removed during the reformation after the Dissolution of the Monasteries (1536). A typical example of this is at Edenhall, near Penrith. The latter still has two plague stones. These were where food and other goods were placed for the sick and where, upon collection, they dropped their pennies into the vinegar. I would be delighted to hear from anyone of existing stones.

My mother in law, Bessie Pass nee Wilkins, 1913 to 2012, was born and brought up on Walney. My wife organised the installation of the plinth and sundial on the golf course as a memorial for her mother.
We have various photographs and a Walney Operatic Society programme / brochure that may be of interest to Walney residents. I have just emailed info@walney-island.com but when I did so about a year ago, got no reply.

My 4 X Great Grandfather and his father were from North Scale in 1764 and Scalebank in 1728, I don\'t yet know if they stayed on the Island for a few years or many years but they had 11 children and 8 children respectively. I must visit in the New Year now that I have learnt this through Ancestry. Any info on the Newby family would be appreciated but I do realise there are many unconnected branches.

This summer I did the complete walk around the shore from Southend caravan park all the way up to the northern tip and back round via the lighthouse - an amazing way to see the Island! Took the \'Seldom Seen\' map with me - an invaluable guide at the time, but your website helped me add context to some of the areas I photographed on my trip.

Visited Barrow / Walney Island in search of traces of Barrow\'s shipbuilding heritage, esp the construction of the Mikasa for the Japanese Navy at the end of the 19th Century. This website was so useful, well presented and a great help to us in locating The Queens Arms + Biggar brewery. Really appreciate the work that has gone into designing & maintaining the site - \'domo arigato\' !

My company are paying a visit to one of Walney\'s local schools for a history workshop and I googled Walney Island just to find out how long the journey would take. I\'m so glad I explored more and found this site - what an enchanting place, I am very much looking forward to our visit to Walney soon!

Many fond memories of walney , living on the caravan site at West shore , going out with the crabbers , collecting golf balls , finding bullets on the dunes , and watching lapwing chicks hatching out at the data base 1968 , seems a long time ago . Brilliant website .

Reading other people\'s memories of Walney brought mine back as I holidayed in the early 1950s there, camping in a school. Watched the tipping of slag at night; a silvery stream going down the slag hill toward the estuary. We kids were from a Barnardo orphanage home near Kendal. Also saw my first albino bird there - a sandmartin.

Hi
This might be a stupid question - but I\'ve wondered for years about a doorframe in Walney Channel - well it looks like a doorframe- you can only see it at low tide. I wondered if you knew what it was for - if you are walking from the dock museum it is before you get to the wreck, I think. It is something that has been bugging me for a long time!
