Obituary: Master Chief Anthony Victor Alfieri, USN (retired)
Retired, IUSS System Master Chief Anthony Victor Alfieri (Tony), USN, aged 79 of East Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia passed away peacefully 28 of October 2025 at the Dartmouth General Hospital in Dartmouth, NS.
Tony was born in New Haven, Connecticut, 9 November 1945. He is predeceased by his parents, Antonio and Lucy Alfieri. He is survived by his wife Rachel Phyllis Williams, his daughter Lisa Alfieri (Tina) and numerous Candelora and Canalori cousins.
Tony joined the United States Navy on the 26 of September 1963. He went to bootcamp at Great Lakes, Illinois and graduated as a Cryptographic Technician (CT). He intercepted electronic intelligence, analyzed foreign communications, and supported cyber information operations. Then in 1972, Tony transferred to Ocean System Technician Analyst (OTA), where he analyzed acoustic information from underwater targets (submarines) and collected scientific data from complex sonar systems.
He achieved the highest enlisted rank in the United States Navy - Master Chief Petty Officer - retiring in 1993 after 30 years of loyal and dedicated service to his country. He then became a full-time facilities maintenance engineer (house hubby) providing unwavering love and support to his "honey" as she continued her career in the Royal Canadian Navy (despite the fact that she's a Toronto Blue Jays fan and he loved the Red Sox).
In addition to the military service, Tony was proud to be a first generation American. He often reminisced in Italian and English about his family and assorted characters from New Haven and West Haven, Connecticut. His stories were epic and had all enthralled as he told them.
The family extends their sincere gratitude to the dedicated and compassionate staff at Dartmouth General, particularly the Emergency Room staff, for the exceptional care provided to Tony during his final days.
Per Tony's request he will be cremated and interred in Arlington National Cemetery. His families will hold a Celebration of Life in Cole Harbour and in the United States in the Spring of 2026. Details for services will be posted here on this site once available.
Fair winds and following seas Anthony, until we meet again…

Re: Obituary: Master Chief Anthony Victor Alfieri, USN (retired)
I had the pleasure of serving with Tony at NAVFAC Eleuthera in 1972-1973 before he became a chief. He was an exceptionally talented junior leader at that stage of his career. I remember that he and three others went over the seawall in Governor's Harbour while driving back into town on a late Saturday night and landed upside down in about three feet of seawater. Luckily no one was killed but all were sent to Patrick AFB for treatment of their injuries on a medevac flight the next morning. Tony was instrumental in saving the lives of the two female OT's that were involved and who were seriously injured. I think alcohol may have been involved but in those days not much was mentioned about that fact. They were lucky that they did not drown because their injuries were serious enough to incapacitate them and prevent them from escaping the vehicle while it was upside down. He returned to duty several weeks later with just a few injuries that were pretty much healed. Had he not been able to extricate them they would have surely drowned. It was great that he was able to spend another 52 years on this earth and make Master Chief and enrich the lives of so many others.
