Capt Harry Benter

I just learned that Capt Harry Benter passed away on March 1, 2025 at age 89 in Southwest Florida. I don't believe this has been reported previously. Capt Benter was C.O. of Navfac Keflavik 1976 to 1978. I was honored to serve as OpsO during his reign. It was a very successful tour. One measure of command leadership: When Master Chief Widenor reported for duty in 1976, Capt Benter had the smarts to assign him as the Operations Chief rather than as Command Master Chief, the job for which he had been detailed. Master Chief Widenor went on to bring the "Widenor method" to Operations. You all know the results. The command benefited immensely from Capt Benter's wise decision. All of you know of the reputation for excellence of NavFac Keflavik during its entire history. There are many of you out there that may agree that 1976-1978 was perhaps the best. RIP Capt. Benter

Re: Capt Harry Benter

So sorry to hear about the passing of Capt Benter. He was a good, steady CO who really changed the temper of Kef. I'm sure I caused him a few gray hairs but I always admired and respected his firm, direct leadership. My condolences to his family.

Re: Capt Harry Benter

Capt Benter was one of three CO’s I served under during the late 70’s in Kef. Quiet man. RIP.

Re: Capt Harry Benter

Capt Benter was my CO on first assignment in Kef. A real gentleman who was always concerned with the issues of the crew. RIP,Sir.

Re: Capt Harry Benter

Captain Benter was a fine CO in Keflavik and an equally fine man. He reenlisted me and did so with sincerity and understood the significance of a sailor continuing his career. It wasn't just a routine ceremony with him, you could just sense how seriously he administered that oath. May he rest well on the other side and smile down on all those he touched.

Re: Capt Harry Benter

Sorry to hear this, he was my CO during my first tour there.
