EXERCISE IN FATALITY
"So, now she's thin again."
"Well, she was never exactly thin. I wouldn't let her because I happen to like a woman who's...well you know that's something else."
One funny thing about that line is the way you kind of wonder about it. For someone who doesn't like them "that way," he definitely get tongue-tied when Jessica answered the door dressed the way she did.
From "Any Old Port in a Storm" (speaking from memory)
Columbo: So your fiancee went missing? Maybe he got cold feet. Has he been married before?
Woman: Yes. Three times.
Columbo: Hmmm...I guess his feet are warm enough.
And Joyce Jillson herself gets a funny line in that scene -
"I was up in Missing Persons but there was no one there."
I always get a laugh out of the scene in Columbo Goes to College when he's interviewing Dominic Doyle. Columbo says that he's from homicide and Doyle replies "I haven't done one of them lately you know?"
You know Grant, I must have heard that missing persons line at least two dozen times and the joke never occurred to me. Who-o-o-sh!
Sgt. Lefkowitz: "You know, Lieutenant, I'm in the homicide office at least once a week. I don't think I've ever seen you there."
Columbo: "Well, I don't get down there too much. None of the murders take place there, you know."
It took me forever too.
Regarding John's comment above about location of murders...
From The Conspirators (this one I had to look up):
Columbo on observing a flat tire: "Will you look at that? How do you like that? That's practically a brand new recap."
Devlin: "Can I give you a hand with the spare?"
Columbo: "Well, the spare, sir, that's back in my garage."
Devlin: "Very sensible. If you get a flat at home, the spare's out and ready."

From Candidate For Crime -
"This isn't a DEPARTMENT car, is it?"
The actor Sandy Kenyon and that look he gives make it even funnier than it would be without him.
